Do you have a spare room that you don’t know what to do with? Or perhaps the kids have just moved out and you’ve found yourself with extra space?
Get some room-spiration with these cool and quirky ideas and savvy design tips from interior designer Katie Barrett (The Design House Manchester), who helps to create some of Countryside’s beautiful show homes…
Fancy yourself as a bookworm?
Do you love getting lost in a good book? Then this room might be the one for you. It wouldn’t take much to turn your spare room into a reading room. All you need is a seating area and a bookshelf to store all your favorite books. Then you can sit back and make your way through the next chapter.
Katie says: “In our hectic lives it’s important to identify a space in your home for relaxation and leisure.
“Think of unique ways to store your books so they contribute to the décor of the room.
“I adore Eva Alessandrini’s modular bookcases… As well as providing great storage, they are available in every number and letter of the alphabet, so you can spell out your own message.”
Adults play games too…
Love to play pool? Or table football? The possibilities are endless with a games room. You could load it up with board games, or even just pop a games console in there to guarantee hours of fun.
Katie says: “I love creating an atmosphere using strong paint colours such as navy blue or charcoal.
“You could even use game inspired décor to bring the room to life. Mini Modern’s Backgammon wallpaper offers a quirky and contemporary nod to the traditional and loved board game.”
Upgrade your closet to a walk in wardrobe…
Do you find that your drawers are spilling over and your wardrobe doors are ready to burst at the seams? Then a walk in wardrobe could be the answer. You can fill your spare room with your storage space and clothes, meaning that your bedroom looks bigger and you have your own Hollywood inspired wardrobe.
Katie says: “The key to creating a beautiful dressing room is careful and considered planning of your space. Consider fitted wardrobe storage or alternatively modular storage solutions from the likes of IKEA or Gautier to make use of every bit of space”
Do you want to bring the big screen home?
A cinema room could be the answer to your prayers. You could be retro and get your hands on a projector for some big screen showings, or you could indulge in a home entertainment system. Kit the room out with beanbags or comfy sofas and you’ve got yourself the perfect place to spend weekends… just don’t forget the popcorn!
Katie says: “As important as the film before your eyes is the comfort of the seating under your bum!
“If you have the space then you could add chaise armchairs, comfy modular sofas or snuggle chairs.”
